Jantzen Diving Girl to Return to Daytona Beach

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (September 18, 2018) – The Jantzen® Diving Girl departed Washington state today for her more than 3,000-mile journey to Daytona Beach. The iconic mannequin beloved by locals and visitors during her 52-year installation as a Boardwalk landmark above Stamies Smart Beachwear on Ocean Avenue will remain a beloved icon as part of ONE DAYTONA’s public art program.

The 16-foot fiberglass mannequin, constructed by Wolf and Vine in Los Angeles in 1959, will be installed on a permanent structure in ONE DAYTONA’s high-energy Victory Circle near the public splash fountain. One of four original Jantzen Diving Girls still in existence, she will spend several weeks preparing for her installation with restoration including a new coat of paint.

“The Jantzen Diving Girl is considered synonymous with Daytona Beach and has become a symbol for our city over several decades, said Lesa France Kennedy, ISC CEO and visionary behind ONE DAYTONA. “She is a brand icon and we look forward to celebrating her return in a big way at ONE DAYTONA.”

The Jantzen Diving Girl joins several other elements in ONE DAYTONA’s public art program including a mixed media sculpture created by local artist Libby Ware and incorporated into the fountain outside of P.F. Chang’s, five aluminum display panels and two tile mosaic walls on the freestanding building in the center island of Daytona Boulevard, a mural by local artist Keylo on BUILT Custom Burger, and the recently wrapped electrical boxes with brilliant designs located throughout the campus.

"We are pleased that the legacy of the iconic Jantzen Diving Girl will continue within Daytona Beach, where she will be prominently displayed for all to enjoy,” said Carol Alhadeff, Jantzen Archivist.

ONE DAYTONA will begin the celebration of the Jantzen Diving Girl’s return this week as it tracks her route from Washington via social media. To follow her journey, please visit Instagram (@onedaytona) or Facebook (OneDaytona).
